Welcome to Appleton, Wisconsin.
Appleton is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, on the Fox River, 100 miles (161 km) north of Milwaukee. It is the principal city of the Appleton, Wisconsin Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is included in the Appleton-Oshkosh-Neenah, Wisconsin Combined Statistical Area with a combined population of around 350,000. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 70,087.
Appleton was settled in 1848 and incorporated as a village in 1853 and as a city in 1857. Early in the 20th century, it adopted the commission form of government, however that type of government has been abandoned in many cities.

Home to Lawrence University, the City of Appleton grew along with the school. With the financial backing of Amos A. Lawrence, the Lawrence Institute was chartered in 1847. Samuel Appleton donated $10,000 to the newly founded college library, and in appreciation, his name was given to the community.
Appleton also had the first telephone in all Wisconsin, the first Chinese restaurant in Outagamie County, and the first incandescent light in any city beyond the East Coast. The first hydroelectric power was generated in Appleton, on the Fox River.
Gardens of the Fox Cities (35 acres) are nonprofit botanic gardens and an arboretum located in Appleton Memorial Park. Garden displays and natural areas combine to showcase the seasonal beauty of plants and gardens in Wisconsin. The development of a new Master Plant in May, 2006, sets the stage for the Gardens emergence as a premier horticultural and cultural resource in the Fox Cities -a place of enrichment, inspiration and celebration.
Fox River Mall is the biggest shopping mall in northeast Wisconsin with over 180 stores. It also has a large foodcourt called the Northwoods Cafe which includes more than a dozen counter vendors as well as the local Fox River Brewing Company restaurant. There is a strip mall on the premises called Fox River Plaza.
The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers are a Class A minor league baseball team, affiliated with the Seattle Mariners, that plays in the Midwest League. The team began playing in 1962 as the Appleton Foxes. That name stayed until 1994, with the exception of a few years (1963-66) when they were known as the Fox Cities Foxes. The team was renamed the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers for the 1995 season after moving from its original home, Goodland Field in Appleton (built in 1940), to the new Fox Cities Stadium in nearby Grand Chute.
